Highlights from the summer on the plinth
Tim Marlow looks back at arguably the most ambitious and popular art installation of 2009. During Antony Gormley’s One & Other 2400 British citizens became living statues on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square ; 13 people stripped naked, 3 people jumped off the plinth, 11 people proposed and 1 person had to be rescued.
Art historian, broadcaster and current Director of Exhibitions at London’s White Cube gallery Tim Marlow brings you the highlights from One & Other including how the ‘living statues’ coped with the rain and gale force winds of the British summer, a selection of the most memorable plinthers and counts down the Top 10 plinthers who received the most ‘hits’ online.
Antony Gormley gives his verdict on the One & Other project, comedian Robin Ince remembers the more eccentric plinthers and historian Bettany Hughes takes a look back at some of the more poignant moments.
From a plea for a stay of execution from a British citizen on death row in America to protests about MP’s expenses to a nearly nude pole dancer. Antony Gormley’s One & Other created a picture of Britain today. But what did it all say about us?
