One & Other

One & Other was artist Antony Gormley’s extraordinary commission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square where over 100 days, from 6 July – 14 October 2009, 2,400 people from around the UK took their turn occupying the plinth continuously for an hour each. The ‘plinthers’ helped create a unique living monument, collectively termed ‘a portrait of Britain’.

With the help our our creative partners Artichoke, we took the project to a global audience through an interactive website with 24 hour live multicamera webstream and a weekly television highlights show presented live from Trafalgar Square.

So, who was on the plinth?
   1,210 men and 1,190 women
Youngest plinther was 16 years old, oldest 84
   95 pensioners and 131 teenagers
   127 teachers and 332 students
1 person had to be rescued
   3 people jumped off
11 proposals of marriage, one declined
13 people bared all on the plinth, one was told to put his pants back on…

One & Other - the offical book
The One & Other book contains studio portraits of all the ‘plinthers’ prior to their appearance as we capture the emotional intensity and the personally transformative effect that was created by one of the most extraordinary works of public art in our time.

Does the oneandother site need a better server or something? I can’t get it to do anything at all. Or maybe it somehow recognises that I’m not a major Gormley fan?

The highlights programme with Clive Anderson just shown on Sky Arts was really dreadful and annoying - lots of waffle while the people on the plinth were barely shown at all, and when they briefly were it was accompanied by patronising comments from Clive Anderson

COULD ANTHONY GORMLEY PLEASE STEP BACK AND GIVE OTHER ARTISTS A CHANCE TO BE IN THE SPOT LIGHT FOR ONCE? THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A REAL OPPORTUNITY TO FIND NEW TALENT.

How exactly is allowing 2400 people to participate in a piece of artwork with international coverage self-indulgent?

The highlights show is much better when Tim Marlow presents it. Clive Anderson is too busy being clever with the studio guest and, as someone else said, being patronising about the plinthers. Tim every week, please!

Is it possible to download a good quality web video stream of myself on the plinth...not sure about buying a copy...would be nicer if plinthers were presented with a copy for participating!! After all it did cost some of us (having disability issues) to get there and back by taxi at an unearthly hour!
