Documentary on the idiosyncratic and controversial painter of young nude women, who died in 2000, as seen through the eyes of his daughter
It's hardly surprising that the artist Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola was better known simply as 'Balthus' presumably it meant that his canvases did not have to be three metres wide simply in order to accommodate his signature but this nononsense, back-to-basics approach was one that was also reflected in his work: entirely self-taught, he studied the great masters by himself, happily spent years on a single canvas and would produce many variants of the same piece.
This is an intimate portrait of the artist in his later years, as seen through the eyes of his daughter, Harumi. Beginning in Italy and then moving to his beloved Swiss home, Balthus discusses his techniques, demonstrates his workshop, and explains the ethos behind his work, which, with its focus on adolescent girls, famously treads a fine line between innocence and perversity. A moving insight into the artist towards the end of his life, this revealing documentary is one of the few and last testimonies of the master who shunned interviews.
