Where does vandalism end and art begin?

Charting the beginnings of graffiti art, this documentary marks its transition from eyesore to global recognition as an innovative art form and thus the urban art movement that replaced pop art.

Graffiti and street art has come a long way in the 21st century. Artists like Bristol-based Banksy, who were once considered vandals with criminal convictions, now see their work sold by the likes of Sotheby's and Bonhams for hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Graffiti: From Tags to Riches explores the motivations and inspirations behind some of the scene's most talented artists, including Sickboy, Xenz, and the critically acclaimed Cylcops, and will be presented by DJ and lifelong fan of the urban art scene, Goldie.

The programme will illustrate the way Western society's graffiti is developing from simple tagging and spray-painted murals to stencil work, street installations, and pre-fab paper cut-outs, and how with these changes graffiti is gaining more in common with mainstream art than its rebellious origins. With contributions from artists, taggers, council members and resident groups Graffiti: From Tags to Riches explores the wider implications of graffiti, raising the question: does graffiti become more credible as a piece of art if it is removed from its source - the streets - and viewed in a different context - an art gallery?
