Portrait of the painter Ramie Leahy as he travels to Cuba to paint nudes
In March 2000, Irish artist Ramie Leahy left his home in Kilkenny to go to Cuba to paint nudes. Accompanying him on his journey was the director Kevin Hughes, who followed Leahy for a year and a half as he travelled around in search of some truth about living his life in the context of all the history surrounding him.
Leahy, known for his fast painting action and colourful canvases bursting with splashes of vitality, expounds on his motivations and techniques, and describes his hopes and expectations for the trip.
The making of the film took the pair to such diverse locations as the deepest jungles in Cuba and tropical deserted beaches, to the cold winter winds that spiral through narrow cobbled streets of Santiago, and these vivacious surroundings are echoed in Leahy's exuberant paintings.
This is a fascinating insight into a man whose life is ruled by his art, set against a background of inimitable Cuban colour, with all its inherent music, energy and joie de vivre.
