Mike Figgis looks back at the plinth project
After 100 days of propping up human statues, Trafalgar Square’s fourth plinth is empty once again.
Antony Gormley’s brainchild ended after seeing 2,400 members of the public make history in this ground-breaking art project, each enjoying their one-hour slots on the famous pedestal. The project began at 9am on Monday 6 July and Sky Arts followed all of the weird and wonderful characters who caught the country’s imagination. From musicians and job seekers to campaigners and naturists, those who took their place on the famous platform represented the full spectrum of Britain’s public and then some.
Having spent an hour on the plinth himself, giving the crowd a lesson in how to use the plinth’s cameras and entertaining them with his trumpet playing, Mike Figgis, the director of Leaving Las Vegas and Internal Affairs, directs this documentary about the plinthers. It depicts the highs and lows and features highlights of the best and worst of the One and Other experience.
