Could you be art on Trafalgar Square?

One and Other on Sky Arts

In what is set to be the highlight of the summer, Sky Arts and the creative company Artichoke are working with artist Antony Gormley to bring you One & Other. In the winning commission for the Fourth Plinth on Trafalgar Square, we will place a different person on the plinth for one hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days. During the project, 2400 people will become living sculptures, creating a unique snapshot of our extraordinary, multi-layered society.

CLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW TO WATCH ANTONY GORMLEY'S MESSAGE ABOUT THE EVENT

Antony Gormley is one of Britain's best-known artists. His Angel of the North, situated beside the A1 in Tyneside, is one of the best-known pieces of public art in the country. The Fourth Plinth, built in 1841, was originally intended for an equestrian statue but it was left empty due to lack of money. For the last decade, the plinth has become the location for specially commissioned art works by contemporary artists, including Mark Wallinger and Rachel Whiteread.

This is excellent, how can I apply to be on the plinth?
The dedicated One & Other website will act not only as an entry point for information on the project, but also where people register and apply to stand on the plinth. Once the project gets going, you'll also be able to see 24-hour live streamed content, interviews and a back catalogue of every hour of the 100 days. Anyone interested can register their interest and 2400 participants will be randomly chosen from the applicants. The lucky participants can then create their own profiles on the One & Other website, upload videos and encourage people to come and see them become art.

Visit the One & Other website to watch the live stream and apply for your hour on the Fourth Plinth >>

Have just registered my interest to be chosen ‘for the plinth?
I would particularly like to have a ‘spot’ on June 16h which is world wide Bloomsday and a celebration of James Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’.
If chosen I hope to be James, read from some of his writings and sing some of his favourite songs.

Absolutely awe-inspiring. I have a following of 80,000 people online and would love to be on that plinth - I would take a live web cam and stream it myself online! This could be the first ever live webcam seminar from the top of a plinth in Trafalgar Square! grin

I would show how much it sucks to be the unlucky person sitting on a plinth in the rain at 3am fielding abuse and missiles from homeward bound drunks. I’m sure Mr Gormley will be right there by my side, though.

There are far too many statues to wealthy (and sometimes not really very nice) people. Let’s fill it with ordinary folk and not the pretentious who see this as a chance to massage their egos. Stay true, Antony.

What a good idea. It would be a chance of a life time for the people that would be luckily selected. Having the chance, to be able, to take part in this one of artistic performance by portraying Britain as an individual and as a unity is an amazing opportunity. If I was given the opportunity I would like to perform, how as a country we are very seen as being strong people, sticking tightly together through good and bad times, Portrayed with our quintessential British humor.

Is nudity an option? It is for me!

So what if it’s dull? The way I see it - this is a huge living sculpture made up of 2400 individuals representing themselves.  If wants to perform for an hour or make huge statements and court the attention then go for it but a lot of people lead quiet lives and this project will reflect that too.  I think it’s what will make the light and shade of Gormley’s overall picture - you can’t have all of one and none of the other if you want it to look three-dimensional.

One and Other is a work by Anthony Gormley. The 2400 individuals who make up ‘the piece’ are of little consequence; they are the material (the ‘clay’, if you will) that makes up the concept. Like the work of Jeremy Deller, this work by Gormley is part of a trend that has been going on for a long time now. It is based on the patronising assumption that these artists are somehow ‘enabling’ ‘ordinary people’ to express themselves. The only people who benefit from this is the artist, his career and the publicly funded cultural institutions that are desperate to be seen to be ‘relevant’. Everyone is perfectly capable of creating his or her own culture – art, writing, music, whatever… Moreover, with the internet or any other form of DIY method, we can communicate and contribute to our collective culture and bypass these parasites. We don’t need these w**kers in order to make art. Reclaim your dignity and reject this farce now!

Regardless of the Artist’s motivation it’s an opportunity to use and make of it whatever we will. People who love and embrace life and opportunities will embrace it. People who criticise and look cynically at life will criticise. Isn’t it simply easier to just love and accept everything exactly as it is and everyone exactly as they are? Love and Peace to all!
