The Art of The Heist: Series 1, Part 3 - The Forger and the Conman
See TV listings for this programme
The real-life, audacious art thefts that inspired films such as The Thomas Crown Affair and Entrapment. Part 3 looks at the story of master forger John Myatt.
It's easy to see why art theft has historically been pretty popular: works of art worth millions are hung up for public inspection, are highly sought after, and are lightweight and easy to conceal. While most high-profile museums now have complex security systems, there always has and indeed there may always will be both the temptation and the demand for stolen works of art. This is the story of some of the most audacious, cunning and expensive art thefts ever.
Part 3: The Forger and the Conman
The scam was eventually exposed by a disgruntled partner and an American art expert living in Paris. Drewe was sentenced to six years in prison for his part in the fraud that shook the art world. Myatt went to prison for a year but now has a lucrative and legitimate career as a painter of 'genuine fakes'. This film traces the rise and fall of the forger and the conman and shows how, for years, they were able to fool some of the best art experts in the world.
