We have launched the Sky Arts Street Galleries, a bold new project that will transform the streets of the UK from a whirlwind of advertising to an outdoor art gallery.
The Street Galleries take over every billboard, poster, bus stop, phone box and advertising space in the main street of six major cities across the UK, to exhibit specially commissioned innovative photos by award-winning photographer, Rankin.
Rankin is world famous for his iconic images – be they fashion; A-list celebrities or royalty, and is one of the most sought-after photographers at work today. He has produced sixteen images for us, each representing a different form of art, which can be found on one of Sky Arts’ television channels.
From ballet to modern art, music to literature, the striking images will transform the high streets of Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, London, Liverpool and Edinburgh, bringing bold art to the British public in an innovative new way and confirming that Sky Arts is truly the home of the arts on television.
Sky Arts Street Galleries will be revealed at the following locations on the morning of Monday 16 August (and you can see the exact locations of our posters in the gallery above):
- Manchester – Parker Street, Piccadilly Gardens
- Birmingham – New Street
- Edinburgh – George Street
- Newcastle – Blacket Street
- Liverpool – Renshaw Street
- London – Tottenham Court Road
An exciting and revealing documentary has also been filmed all about the making of the campaign, from the initial idea and the photo shoot through to the posters being put up throughout the UK. Rankin: Sky Arts Street Galleries one not to be missed and will be shown on Sky Arts throughout August.

I was in a tube station in London last night and Sera Akinbiyi -on a Sky Arts Street Galleries poster- stopped me in my tracks. This rarely happens but her image was so strickingly beautiful (and unfortunately rare) that I took down the details and here I am on the website. I hope to see a lot more of her in the future…
