The ex-English cricket captain's new art project

He will forever be remembered as the man who won back the Ashes for England during the epic summer of 2005. But now Michael Vaughan has retired from cricket and new challenges beckon – not least pursuing his interest in modern art.

In June, Sky Arts was given exclusive access to his studio near the Peak District where he has been creating paintings with bats and balls.

He calls it ‘Artballing’ and the inspiration came to him from pictures produced by the former tennis champion Martina Navratilova. She’d been making pop-art pictures by hitting paint-soaked tennis balls against a blank canvas. Vaughan has adapted the idea to help him recreate some of the highlights of his cricket career.

For more cricketer-turned-artist action, find out what a certain ex-England wicket-keeper has been up to lately, watch Working Space: Jack Russell, painter.
