Nudes: Antony Gormley’s One & Other
Our 13 naked plinthers reveal all...
Video: Lady Godiva >> Video: pole dancer >> Video: Nudes >>
Tim Marlow looks back at Antony Gormley’s One & Other in which 2400 British citizens became ‘living statues’ on the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square ; 13 of which created a stir by stripping completely naked, including naturists, a pole-dancer and exhibitionists.
Art historian, broadcaster and current Director of Exhibitions at London’s White Cube gallery Tim Marlow remembers the plinthers who stripped off and challenged societies attitude towards nudity. The plinth’s first nude Eric Page wanted to raise awareness for HIV and Aids and Kiran Mahay went up in the guise of Lady Godiva to promote naturism. Sara Burden used her naked form to create a homage to Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North, pole-dancer Naomi MacDonald wanted to make people smile and Ollie Campbell combined nudity, random inflatables and a chicken to provide arguably the most surreal hour on the plinth.
We also find out what the tourists and commuters thought about being confronted with nudity on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. This is Antony Gormley’s One & Other stripped bare.
