This series is all very well but virtually all the ballet items have been shown many times before. There seems to be less ballet shown now there is a dedicated classical arts channel than there was before, and certainly less than when the channel was Artsworld. The treatment of ballet contrasts very much wirh the opera where there is an opera shown nearly every day. Also (I know I’ve said this before but nobody seems to listen) if you click on opera there is a (very long) list of operas and opera based performances this month. If you click on dance there is no such list as it would only highlight the paucity of dance in comparison to opera. Please could we have more ballet, especially works that haven’t been shown before. Perhaps Sky Arts could show programmes that other countries have recorded for tv. The showing of the Jonathan Miller la Boheme was interesting as it was the flagship programme of the new classical internet tv channel; classicaltv.com. Is Skyarts going to show all their output, including the ballet. That would be worth watching.

I absolutely agree with Joan Hopton. Dance is just a poor relation on Sky Arts. The old Artsworld had a policy of dance in peak time every wednesday and some of its programming was very interesting work from abroad. If dance gets on Sky Arts at all it is at off peak times of day, and Ballet Rocks is on, time after time!! This ‘Ballet Boyz’ season is hardly original fare. I am very dissatisfied with Sky Arts’ niggardly recognition of this art form.

Yes, I agree with the other two comments.  There is not enough dance on Sky Arts and particularly ballet.  I miss the regular ballet spot that there was on Artsworld.  I would like to see some works which we have not seen time and time again.  I did enjoy Ballets Russes which was on this evening.

I would like to echo the sentiments expressed above, there is a limit to the number of times one wants to watch the Royal Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ and ‘Sylvia’ has been broadcast on and off for at least three years.  ‘Ballets Russes’ is a fine and interesting film but I watch it on DVD for the even more interesting extras which are never broadcast.  A quick look at Amazon reveals there are DVDs of new material available should Sky Arts really have a committment to dance!

As a very proud Dad of a boy at one of the elite dance schools all I can say is thank F*** Sky Arts 2 is showing any dance at all. Without them we would have nothing at all.

Some of it has plunged ballet into an abyss that stereotypes this particular dance form, if you only want to watch MacMillan, Ashton and perhaps Ballentine.

Bourne challenges dancers to explore the boundary between contemporary and Ultra classical, but tonight’s offering of Sylvia was absolutely superb. Not only did I enjoy it beyond all measure, but I can see my son dancing it and thoroughly enjoying dancing any of those roles.

Watch out, A Dad breaking all the stereotypes in loving watching his son dance and being extraordinarily proud of him being outstanding in dancing instead of being a football hooligan.

Ouch, don’t tell him in case he demands a proud Dad pocket money leverage on me.

I only wish that when I was at school that dance was an accepted exercise form.

I too am very disappointed in the amount of ballet on Sky Arts 2, although I admire much of the rest, being also an opera fan. The Ballet Boyz I find tiresome to watch and long for full performances of classical and more modern dance, including the very modern. Rambert, Ballet of the 20th Century, “Cruel Garden”, “The Rakes Progress”: these are just some of the things I would like to see scheduled.

I’m joining this debate a bit late, but I’d like to see more dance, & more variety of dance on Sky Arts - there was more a couple of years ago than there is now.  The BBC had a fantastic archive of dance films which they never seem to show now, but would be well worth seeing again - if not the original cast, then something very close to it for ‘La Fille Mal Gardee’, ‘The Dream’, ‘A Month in the Country’ & ‘Elite Syncopations’ just to start with; I can also remember Merle Park in ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, Marion Tait in ‘Pineapple Poll’ & ‘Les Rendezvous’; & that’s just the Royal Ballet - all worth seeing again.  There were also films of the Ballet Rambert & LCDT - I particularly recall ‘Pulcinella’ & ‘The Cruel Garden’.  Some of these have been shown at the National Film Theatre - there are decent copies in existence which could be interesting to people who can’t get to London all the time.  I like Opera too, but would happily forego some of this for a bit more ballet & dance
