Documentary on the making of Ballet Rocks
Until quite recently, ballet had a staid, traditional image. Ballerinas were immaculate beings with hair in buns and tutus perfectly starched. How times have changed.
Sky Arts teamed up with English National Ballet, leading fashion designer Giles Deacon and British band Bloc Party to produce a cutting edge dance film which fuses classical ballet with contemporary music and design.
The work is choreographed by English National Ballet's 22 year-old Artist of the Company Jenna Lee, who trained at English National Ballet School and has been with the Company since 2002. She has choreographed for fashion shows, including performances for New Look and Harrods, and is tipped to be a major choreographic force in the dance world.
The piece features acclaimed designer Giles Deacon's unconventional, unashamedly sexy costumes, is set to Bloc Party's punky, rocky song, Banquet, and innovatively combines modern elements with ballet's traditional strength and fluidity.
In addition to showing the work, the programme also features a behind-the-scenes 'making of' documentary that reveals how Ballet Rocks came into being, from the inspiration behind the costumes to the practicalities of filming dance - fascinating stuff for dance and fashion fans alike.
