Joseph Russillo is a dancer and choreographer, who founded the renowned company Ballet Théâtre Joseph Russillo, and is also the director of the National Centre of Choreography in Toulouse.
Hommes consists of four separate pieces performed solely by men, beginning with Fontaine sur l'avenue du solitaire, choreographed by Reynald Desire. Set to Debussy's delicate score, the ballet is graceful and intriguing, and not without homoerotic undertones.
The second piece, La dernière larme ('The Last Tear') is set to music by the Hungarian composer Istvan Marta and the Polish film music composer Zbibgniew Preisner, most famous for the score to the Three Colours trilogy. Bursting with dramatic choreography, this is a powerful piece, performed with knife-edge accuracy.
The third piece is La jeune fille et la mort ('The Young Girl and Death') which is set sumptuously to a very modern score and serves as a piquant contrast to the other performance pieces.
Finally, the fourth piece sees Boy Scouts and New York City workers dancing to a score by John Adams. This is an energetic, witty, humorous and hugely enjoyable piece.
This is a programme of modern dance that is at once graceful and powerful and warm and witty, and should not be missed by fans of dance.
