Act I
Giselle, who has a passion for dancing, is reminded by her worried mother Berthe not to dance too much because of her weak heart. Berthe fears that her daughter will fall under the spell of the Wilis, the spirits of young girls who have died before their wedding night and who force all men they come across to dance to their death.
Count Albrecht has fallen in love with Giselle and he presents himself to her disguised as Loys, a simple village boy. One day when he goes to meet her, Hilarion, Giselle’s admirer, flies into a jealous rage. Later when the Duke and his daughter Bathilde’s hunting party seek rest at Giselle’s mother’s house, Hilarion unmasks Albrecht. Bathilde reveals that she is officially engaged to Albrecht. The tragedy reaches its climax when Giselle, love-sick and distraught, finally dies of a broken heart.
Act II
After her death, Giselle is initiated into the wicked supernatural world of the Wilis. Hilarion comes to mourn at Giselle’s grave. Commanded by their pitiless queen, Myrtha, the Wilis chase Hilarion to his death. The Wilis then turn on Albrecht, but he is saved by Giselle’s true and pure love that reaches beyond the grave. Love conquers evil and Albrecht’s life is spared.
