One of America's best dancer-choreographers, Daniel Ezralow, and his one-man multi-media show
Mandala is a solo modern-dance work-in-progress from dancer-choreographer Daniel Ezralow. This hour-long documentary is built around a performance of his show in Italy and acts as a springboard to tell the story of how a pre-med student took one dance lesson for fun and ended up as one of the pre-eminent choreographers in the world.
With a career now spanning 20 years and showing no sign of let-up, Ezralow has danced with the likes of New York's powerful Taylor Dance Company, before rebelling to create his own companies, including the very successful ISO. He has developed a bravura style of high-tech, high-octane dance routines which reflect his believe that all media can be blended into modern dance forms. Mandala involves the use of multiple video screens and video projection. It even requires Ezralow to interact with his own recorded image on several occasions.
Mandala is a revealing look at the "blood-and-guts" of creating a modern art form and features interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of the man himself at work.
A native of Los Angeles, Ezralow started dancing while he was a pre-med student at the University of California at Berkeley with David and Marni Wood. Very active as a freelance choreographer, Ezralow has choreographed original works for, among others, Paris Opera Ballet, Rudolf Nureyev, London Contemporary Dance Company and Helsinki City Theater Dance Company.
A diverse performer, Ezralow works as a lead actor, dancer and choreographer. In the fashion world he has collaborated with designers Issey Miyake and Koji Tatsuno. He has also choreographed music videos for Sting, U2 and David Bowie.
