Fascinating interview with a cinematic legend
Friedrich ‘Fritz’ Lang began forming his reputation in cinema after directing Metropolis, a 1927 silent science fiction film exploring the crisis between workers and owners in a capitalist society. At the time, it was the most expensive film ever made, with a combination of impressive special effects and German expressionism that would immortalise Lang as a film legend.
This documentary sees him in front of the camera, talking to William Friedkin in 1975 about subjects ranging from his early life in the Weimar Republic to his passion for filmmaking, revealing a fascinating portrait of the so-called ‘Master of Darkness’.

I can’t understand why this Fritz lang season wasn’t heralded in the Sky Arts newsletter. Luckily, the interview is being repeated, and I managed to spot Dr Mabuse in time, but missed Metropolis. This is the kind of thing that should be marked as a highlight, instead of ongoing series like the Met Opera season and One and Other, which almost all viewers will already be aware of.
