Based on the 1949 novel of the same name by Isak Dinesen (the pen name of Danish countess Karen Blixen, who also wrote Out of Africa), Babette's Feast centres on the two adult daughters of a puritanical pastor in 19th century Denmark. Despite opportunities of love and fame in their youth, they remain in their father's house after his death until a refugee - Babette - arrives and takes charge of a memorial feast in his honour, with joyous consequences.

Sensitive, funny, and hopeful yet restrained, this is a mouthwatering film about pietism and the sensuality of food, and will be appreciated by foodies and film fans in equal measure.
