John Marley and Lynn Carlin star as Richard and Maria Forst, in John Cassavetes' acclaimed emotional drama about a married couple who hit a crossroads in their relationship and try to seek solace elsewhere. One evening Richard meets beautiful escort Jeannie (Gena Rowlands), and arranges to meet her, but she does not keep their appointment, giving Richard cause to investigate. Meanwhile, his wife Maria goes to a nightclub with some friends and ends up taking an ageing playboy home. In a story which highlights the pain of discontent, Cassavetes uses panning and zooming shots that appear as if the camera is chasing action, reflecting the characters' desperate attempts to cling to anything that may rescue them from their empty existence.
