Sky Arts and the British Film Institute have agreed a new partnership to restore a selection of classic British films to high definition format.
The BFI is the country's foremost custodian of British film, founded to promote understanding, appreciation and access to film and television culture. The films we're helping to restore span a wide and representative range of the BFI catalogue, so why not experience a high definition tour of these important BFI highlights?
High definition of course, does what it says on the tin, using more than four times the picture detail of normal TV, it makes pictures sharper, clearer and more vibrant. As a result, these films, following their transferral from film stock to HD, are literally, looking the best they ever have.
Peter Greenaway, the director and film-maker who trained as an artist and is known for his painterly approach to film may well be more famous for black comedies such as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, but in 1983 he turned his hand to this unusual four-part documentary on some of the brightest composing stars of the American contemporary classical music scene; Philip Glass; Meredith Monk; Robert Ashley and John Cage, some of whom have gone on to great worldwide prominence, and some of whom haven't see Greenaway's interpretation of their skills in this unique film.
