“Everybody’s in love with the wrong person,” says Hannah (Greta Gerwig). If anyone should know, it’s her, an intern at a Chicago production company who idly trades boyfriend for boyfriend. First to go is colleague Mike, who makes the mistake of leaving the firm. “I’ve upgraded,” he tells her. “I had a job and quit. Now I don’t have a job.” She upgrades as well, to her nerdy boss, Paul. But he doesn’t have the mojo either. Will trumpet-playing Matt be the answer?

Talky twentysomethings aimlessly swap dreams, jokes and partners in this contemporary indie comedy. Welcome to ‘mumblecore’, the DIY film movement that throws together handheld cameras, shoestring budgets and no-name casts in a series of gawky, bittersweet entanglements. Imagine Wes Anderson, then take away all scripts and add iPhones.

But pay attention to this ensemble, because these slackers may become stars. Leading lady Gerwig certainly isn’t resting on her laurels; next year, she’s set to appear in comedy Greenberg alongside Ben Stiller.
