This is a fine, moving, and superbly authentic portrait of a relationship falling apart. Anne and Pierre are at the cinema (watching Roberto Rossellini's obscure Europa 51) - but as Pierre reaches for Anne's hand, she withdraws. It's the first sign that something is wrong. In the words of the old saying, he is the first to suspect and the last two know: Anne is having an affair.
Pierre dotes on the couple's young son, but realises as he videos him that this may be all he will be left with - for, as his lawyer explains, the rights all rest with the mother.
Auteuil and Huppert are outstanding as the sensitive couple bewildered by the events that unfold, and Christian Vincent's direction (and writing) ensures that this rich, well-observed film leaves a powerful impression.
