A pure Surrealist film that encompasses drama, comedy, romance and fantasy into its complex structure. This was Buñuel's first feature film, and although it has more of a plot than Un Chien Andalou, as one would expect of the genre, its storyline is hazy. In short, a couple who are passionately in love find themselves unable to consummate their passion and are torn apart by various factors including the Chruch, their families, society and their own desires.

On its release, the film was so controversial that protesters, including the League of Patriots and the Anti-Semitic League threw ink at the screen and destroyed art work by Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst and others on display in the foyer. It was later banned, but today the film remains the epitome of its genre - a gleeful and anarchic example of the late-1920s Surrealist reaction to the corrupt technological age.
