The original Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which features soon-to-be classic standards such as Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' and The Surrey with the Fringe on Top opened in New York in 1943, and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances before closing in 1948. A film version followed in 1955 which won an Oscar and starred Gordon MacRae and Gloria Grahame, and while numerous productions have been performed over the years, it was Sir Trevor Nunn's 1998 version that struck a chord with modern audiences.

Produced for the National Theatre in 1998,where it starred the ever-popular duo of Hugh Jackman and Maureen Lipman, the production moved to the West End the following year, with a revival opening on Broadway in March 2002.

Set in Oklahoma in 1906, the musical tells the story of cowboy Curly McLain and his romance with farmer girl Laurey Williams. Their love is challenged by farmhand, Jud Fry, and much of the play follows the contest between Curly and Jud for Laurey's affections.

While most remember the music for its catchy songs, it is also significant in its genre for its use of innovative storytelling techniques, its focus on emotional empathy and its social and historical subject matter.
