Sky Arts pays homage to the man often hailed as the father of independent cinema. Cassavettes' maverick approach to filmmaking and refusal to submit to the conventions of the Hollywood studio system inspired generations of directors. Five of his finest works can be seen in April, beginning with his 1959 improvisational film Shadows. This Oscar-nominated story of an unravelling marriage was his first feature film as a director. Entirely improvised, it's a black and white tale of black siblings living in Manhattan, trying to make ends meet and dealing with conflicting emotional crises.
