A fictionalised biopic of Argentina's first rock star, Jose Alberto Cruz (nicknamed 'Tango'), the first artist to compose and sing in Spanish, was a hit in 1993 throughout South America and its stars immediately shot to fame.
The central figure, Tango, is a musician whose music, rebellion and peace activism inspire the youth of 1960s Buenos Aries. Following a student demonstration, Tango meets Mariana, a student committed to freedom but trying to escape her privileged past. They fall in love, but are cruelly parted when the local police chief seeks political gain by using Tango to discover the leaders of the growing youth movement. However, in spite of his appalling prison experiences, Tango fights on in the hope of being freed and reunited with Mariana.
With a soundtrack based on popular South American hits (Piñeiro was not given the rights to the originals), the film is a well-produced examination of the life of a singing sensation, becoming more a metaphor for the rigours of the cult of celebrity then a biopic on an individual singer.
