Herbert Blomstedt leads the Gewandhaus Orchestra for the last time, performing JS Bach's beautiful Mass in B minor

Programme
J.S Bach: Mass in B minor

Performers
Ruth Ziesak (soprano)
Anna Larsson (alto)
Christoph Genz (tenor)
Dietrich Henschel (bass)
Herbert Blomstedt (conductor)
The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and Chorus

Herbert Blomstedt appears here with the Gewandhaus Orchestra for the last time as the Gewandhaus Music Director in this recording. After seven successful years in Leipzig, the maestro performed a work that is especially dear to him: Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B minor, performed in the beautiful St Thomas' Church (the Thomaskirche) in Leipzig.

Blomstedt's reading of the Mass - arguably one of the greatest works of church music ever written - is conceived and executed on the highest level. The performance as a whole vibrates with life: the work of the Gewandhaus' Orchestra and Choir and the outstanding soloists is exemplary. A treat for all Bach fans.
