Part 1 of 5. Documentary series. In this programme, the LSSO's young musicians prepare their 50th birthday concert, which includes new work by John Tavener
The London Schools Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest young bands in the world. But every year, as its members leave to go on to jobs, university or music schools, it has to rebuild itself.
The year 2001 saw its 50th anniversary, and to celebrate it put on a programme of thrilling but challenging modern music, including Kodaly's Peacock Variations and Ginastera' Piano Concerto No 1. The new members had just a week to prepare pieces they'd never seen or heard before prior to the big public concert - how would they tackle this huge challenge?
This programme follows the week before the concert, and talks to the teachers, the musicians themselves, and to well-known performers of today who went through the orchestra (including cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, jazzman Django Bates, and conductor Christopher Warren-Green).
Anyone who loves music will be fascinated by this insight into how concerts are put together, and how a group of musicians are brought together to make fine music.
The exciting music heard for the first couple of minutes is another piece by Ginastera: the fourth and last of his ballet set Estancias.
