Daniel Barenboim leads the Berlin Phil and the young Czech horn player Radek Baborak in this delightful all-Mozart Europa Concert
Performers
Horn: Radek Baborak
Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim (conductor)
Programme
Mozart:
Symphony No 35 (The 'Haffner'), K385
Piano Concerto No 22, K482
Horn Concerto No 1, K412
Symphony No 36 (The 'Linz'), K425
The Europa Concert is given every year by the Berlin Philharmonic in a different European city to celebrate the orchestra's anniversary. In 2006, Daniel Barenboim led the ever-delightful orchestra along with the gifted young horn player Radek Baborak in an all-Mozart concert from Prague's Estate Theatre. In recognition of 2006 as the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, the programme features a wealth of Mozart's works, from popular favourites to the less well-known.
Symphony No 35, the 'Haffner', is the lively, powerful work celebrating the ennoblement of Mozart family friend Sigmund Haffner, which features a rousing, fast-paced opera buffa finale. The popular Symphony No 36, the 'Linz' so-called because Mozart reputedly wrote it "at breakneck speed" for an unscheduled town concert in Linz whilst en route from Vienna to Salzburg boasts a pleasing mix of intimate opera fragments and grandiose, rich ceremonials.
Perhaps less frequently-heard are the sophisticated and often-overlooked Piano Concerto No 22 in E flat major and the hugely enjoyable Horn Concerto No 1, which Mozart wrote for his friend and fellow member of the Salzburg court orchestra, the horn player Joseph Leutgeb, and which is performed here by the renowned Czech horn player, Radek Baborak. This special concert is recorded live in Prague, and the unique combination of Barenboim, Baborak and the Berlin Phil promises a fine evening's entertainment.
Please note: in a change to the advertised programme, the concert features Radek Baborak and the Horn Concerto No 1 instead of Cecilia Bartoli and the Masonic Funeral Music. Our apologies for any confusion.
