There is no question that in the world of music Sam Phillips began a rock‘n’roll revolution when he created Sun Records – the place where Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and many others began their legendary careers.
Sun Records, which was founded in 1952, played a significant role in the emergence of rock’n’roll as a major form of popular music in the 1950s. Phillips, who is credited with teaching production to Elvis Presley, was keen to experiment in the studio and his open style allowed musicians to perform beyond his –and their- expectations. He encouraged his artists to strive for ‘feel’ rather than technical perfection, resulting in some of the most ground-breaking music of the era.
Along with rare footage, the work of many original Sun artists is performed by musicians such as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, several accompanied by Elvis’ original sidemen. This film also includes a moving version of Lonely Weekend with Jerry Lee Lewis and Matchbox Twenty.
