Documentary profile of the colourful life and music of the iconic soul and rhythm-and-blues singer, who died on Christmas Day 2006.
In an age obsessed with celebrity and people famous simply for being famous, it's good to know that there are still a few old school professionals who have earned their wealth and fame through talent, determination and sheer hard work. There can be few better examples of this increasingly rare phenomenon than the American soul singer James Brown.
After a lifetime in the music business, he has garnered a string of epithets 'The Godfather of Soul', 'Mr Dynamite' and 'The Hardest-Working Man in Show Business' a fair assessment for a performer who allegedly sweated off half a stone a night thanks to his high-energy performances, and who was still touring right up until he was taken ill with the pneumonia that was eventually to be his undoing, at the age of 73.
Brown's story was a classic rags-to-riches affair, involving poverty, prison, and a fabled inter-state car chase years before OJ Simpson caught on to the idea. He rose to become a crucial element in not just one, but two revolutions in black American music. As well as being one of the figures largely responsible for turning R&B into soul, most would agree he was also the figure responsible for turning soul music into the funk of the late 1960s and early 70s.
This revealing documentary examines the phenomenon that is the 'Godfather of Soul' and includes footage of some of the performances that made him one of the most charismatic musical icons of the 20th century.
