This 13-part series presents some of the greatest names in today's jazz in concert, rehearsal and interview. Footage from live performances at Montreux Jazz Festival, Banlieues Blues in Paris, and rehearsals from the organised to the informal, is intercut with interviews where the artists talk about their music and influences.
This programme features hot Portuguese vocalist Maria João and pianist Mario Laginha; jazz pioneer Herbie Hancock, who worked with the Miles Davis Quintet and has since gone on to great things in jazz-rock, electronics and crossover; Red Hot and Rhapsody, whose recent CD reinterpreted Gershwin in an irresistible 1990s way; and Al Jarreau, whose intelligent, stylish and inimitable vocals have made him a household name in modern jazz.
