Profile of the life and career of the outstanding French contralto
Works featured
Schubert : Gruppe aus dem Tartarus; Der Musensohn
Brahms : Wie refft ich mich auf
Handel : Air de Barak (Deborah); Giulio Cesare; Alma del gran Pompeo; Al lampo dell'armi; Dall' ondoso periglio: Handel
French contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, born in 1965, brings passion to whatever she does. A fine exponent of Lieder (she studied under German master Hans Hotter) and French song (which she studied with her mother, the soprano Christine Stutzmann) , she also excels in opera and oratorio, and gives masterclasses round Europe. Her voice - a genuine contralto, rather than mezzo-soprano - is even and beautiful across its whole range. Our profile of Stutzmann is followed the next day by a superb concert of Lieder by Schubert, Brahms and Schumann. A glance at her personal website reveals many other personal passions, from astronomy to golf to fine food and wine. If her cooking is anything like her singing, an evening chez Stutzmann would be one to remember.
