Profile of the life and music of Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, whose eerie, rhapsodic music has brought him fame in his 70s

Now in his 70s, the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara has found unexpected commercial success. Unexpected, that is, until you hear his rhapsodic works such as Cantus arcticus (a haunting piece for orchestra and tapes of bird-calls) and Angel of Light (his ethereal Symphony No 7, with its luminously beautiful first movement). There's a tranquillity and elemental force in his work which perfectly evokes the grave beauty of a Finnish lake at dusk.

This impressionistic film explores the life and work of a charismatic man with a refreshingly ironic view of life, a direct way with words, and a vibrant relationship with his young wife Sini. Aarno Cronvall's film draws on striking visual imagery, archive footage and stunning film of the Finnish landscape to evoke Rautavaara's sound.

Passages from Cantus arcticus, Icons, Angel of Light, Angels and Visitations, The Fiddlers, Thomas and Aleksis Kivi are among those featured.

Contributors include baritone Jorma Hynninen, pianist Olli Mustonen, and conductor-pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy, who commissioned a piano concerto from Rautavaara - the lovely No 3, The Gift of Dreams.
