Vibrant traditional Malian music from the acclaimed albino prince in concert in France in 2002
Mali musician Salif Keita, born in 1949, might have chosen his ancestors well - he is a direct descendant of Sundiata Keita, the 13th-century Mandinka warrior king - but the genes weren't kind to him. He is albino, which led in early life to his shunning by family and community.
However, he found music in his teens, and steadily made a reputation with his bands that blended Malian griot music with influences from Guinea, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and hints of Latin with a strong Islamic sound. Guitar, organ and sax play alongside traditional instruments such as kora, balafon and djembe.
Now living in the Mali quarter of Paris, Keita is feted as the 'Golden Voice of Africa', and you can hear why he's one of the continent's foremost musicians in this concert recorded recently in France.
