This recital comes from the Salle Françoys-Bernier, Charlevoix, Quebec. Robert Schumann's poetic Piano Quartet in E flat Op 47, and Francis Poulenc's energetic yet elegant Cello Sonata, are performed with French-Canadian dash by pianist Dale Bartlett and friends.
Schumann composed most of his large-scale chamber works in the single year 1842. His three string quartets, the well known Piano Quintet Op 44, and the Piano Quartet Op 47, were all written at this time, as well as the Fantasy Pieces Op 88.
Poulenc's Cello Sonata was sketched in 1940 but not completed until 1948. It was first played in the Salle Gaveau in Paris on 18 May 1949 by the composer and the joint dedicatee, Pierre Fournier, who also played a significant role in the writing of the cello part. In all four movements the piano usually announces and the cello then decorates the essential line.
