How did some of the most famous songs of our times come to be written? What was the inspiration behind them? And how do they sound when performed "unplugged" by the composer themselves?
KT Tunstall: Songbook
Songbook explores the magic of song-writing with some of today's most successful talents. Talking in an intimate interview about their song-writing careers, the process of constructing and developing the song, and their hopes and fears once it was completed, the artists then give an 'unplugged' performance of the song.

Watch: Dave Stewart: Songbook
The Brit Award-winning musician and songwriter talks to journalist Will Hodgkinson about life as one half of pop duo Eurythmics before playing some of his greatest hits.

Watch: Don McLean: Songbook - Vincent
American singer-songwriter Don McLean tells us how he was inspired to write Vincent as he reminises on the music industry of yesteryear.

Watch: Don McLean: Songbook - American Pie

Watch: Leiber and Stoller: Songbook - Kansas City

Watch: Leiber and Stoller: Songbook - Hound Dog
Will Hodgkinson asks Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller what they thought of Big Mama Thornton’s and Elvis Presley’s version of Hound Dog.

Watch: Diane Warren: Songbook - Radio
“Whispering” Bob Harris talk to Diane Warren on Songbook about the first time Diane heard her song played on the radio and the process of writing music for movies.

Watch: Diane Warren: Songbook - Cracking the code

I really want to show my GCSE music students the first 15 mins of Texas - it’s a brill example of simple songwriting (I Don’t Want A Lover).

Plus, I get to listen to Texas while I teach
Is this going to be available on the internet to show in class?
Thanks

Series 3 was excellent yet again, can’t believe it’s over for another term. Suggestions for series 4, James Skelly from The Coral, Guy Chambers, Richard Ashcroft, Graham Gouldman and/or Eric Stewart from 10cc and as a special programme, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe from the Pet Shop Boys.

has series 2 been on again? i don’t have sky, and would have watched on the skyplayer if i’d known.... i really wanted to see the Albert Hammond programme. it’s so good to see him talking and playing excerpts of songs he wrote for others (clips are on his website), and his own 20 or so albums are very under-rated, even if some are in spanish and/or quite dated

What a brilliant show. The warm interviewing style really brings out amazing insight, and obviously inspires the wonderful performances. So nice to see an interviewer who really knows his subject, and actually listens to his subjects. Love it!

Just watched Squeeze amused by the quivering leg like a dog . Makes me think of the recent volkswagon advert of the dog singing ‘I’m a man ‘. How’s about these of their classic albums . Ray Davies really opened up .The Band one was excellent . In those days vodeos did not exist

Just watched Kelly Jones at Hay Festival, fantastic, the songs sound better than the full band versions. Great musician, singer, songs & programme.
I would recommend Neil Young, The Eagles, CSN, Sting, James Taylor, Jim Kerr, Richard Ashcroft, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Mcartney, David Bowie, Paul Buchanan...some great songs from these artists

Don McLean Songbook
The questions asked weren’t perceptive enough. When you have the great Don McLean sitting there, willing to talk about his music, don’t ask how he got started in the business, that’s easily discovered elsewhere. Ask about his chord progressions, or his melodic structure. At times, the questions were like the ones children would ask. The show is called “Songbook” not “Let’s find out a few things about”. In part, a wasted opportunity to discover more about McLean’s intriguingly original music.
