Valery Gergiev - the Rite of Spring
See TV listings for this programme
Russian conductor Valery Gergiev analyses, explains and conducts rehearsal extracts from Stravinskys celebrated Rite of Spring
Ask any musician to name one, single, piece of music which had more effect on everything that came after it than anything else, and pretty much everyone will mention Stravinsky's Rite of Spring of 1912.
Even to modern ears, stretched by the excesses and absurdities of the 1960s and 1970s, it can sound bewildering at times; but this is no iconoclasm for its own sake. Stravinsky's music is brutal, pagan, earthy, yet always musical - always able to withstand dozens of repeated listenings and still turn up some new subtlety - even though it caused riots at its premiere because of its outrageously physical nature.
In this revealing programme, Valery Gergiev - the charismatic man at the helm of all serious music-making in St Petersburg, whether opera, ballet or concert - analyses this remarkable work, and conducts key extracts. You also have the rare chance to see archive footage of the composer himself (who lived into the 1970s) conducting his own apocalyptic work.
A programme that should not be missed by anyone with an interest in music.
