"There are today magnificent virtuosos, the Yitzhak Perlmans, Vadim Repins, Hilary Hahn, Maxime Vengerovs and the like, but none of them, in my opinion, bears the indisputable mark of that which made the intensely original art of the great violinists of the recent past. Since the death of David Oistrakh and Yehudi Menuhin, I didn't imagine hearing again in my lifetime a sound gifted with such incandescence." So says Bruno Monsaingeon, who should know: known as arguably the finest documentary- maker on classical music today, Monsaingeon is also an excellent violin recitalist himself.
In this performance, Valery Sokolov, born in 1986 in Kharkov, Ukraine is accompanied on the piano by Svetlana Kosenko, and plays music by Beethoven, Prokofiev, Ysaÿe, Saint-Saëns, Dvorak, Bartok and Miroslav Skorikh. The concert, which took place in the Saint-Pierre des Cuisines Auditorium in Toulouse, begins with a short introduction presenting this outstanding young virtuoso, certainly a name to watch.
