    Zappa Plays Zappa

    Frank Zappa and son Dweezil

An exceptional programme celebrating the astounding music of Frank Zappa played by an expert ensemble led by his son, Dweezil.

Genius composer, guitarist and producer, Frank Zappa's body of work is as vast, as it is diverse. His untimely death in 1993 left legions of loyal fans missing his satirical flair and brilliant musicianship.

Deciding that his father's music had been missing from today's musical landscape for far too long, Dweezil chose to dive headlong into the massive project that became the successful concert tour Zappa Plays Zappa. In 2006, two of the shows were pristinely filmed and recorded (in Portland, and Seattle, WA), so every fan now has the chance to relive the performance again and again. The programme scooped the Best Rock Instrumental Performance Award at the 51st Grammy Awards.

Dweezil Zappa performs with a group of top-flight and renowned musicians and special guest Steve Vai (guitar), Napoleon Murphy Brock (vocals, sax and flute) and Terry Bozzio (drum).

Zappa has always been my favorite band, but I have avoided Zappa plays Zappa thinking it would be some limp imitation of his music.  After seeing this I can say that I was wrong!  They play some of the old favorites very well, but best of all is that they play a load of new music that Zappa “might” have played, and it really grabbed me, just like old Zappa 40 yrs ago.

Zappa is the greatest musician that ever lived, he is no longer with us but Dweezil is the ultimate tribute. I hope he manages to weave some of his solo material into the setlist.
