La bohème live on Sky Arts

Broadcast live from the ENO

SKY ARTS 1 - NON-STOP LIVE COVERAGE OF BEHIND THE SCENES AS LA BOHEME IS PERFORMED LIVE ON STAGE

SKY ARTS 2 - THE LIVE ON-STAGE PERFORMANCE

SKY ARTS HD - LIVE ON-STAGE...BROADCAST IN STUNNING HIGH DEFINITION

LIVE FROM LONDON'S COLISEUM...

In a world first for broadcasting, Sky Arts 2 and Sky Arts HD will screen Jonathan Miller’s eagerly awaited new production of Puccini’s La bohème for ENO, whilst simultaneously Sky Arts 1 will screen all the backstage action live, as it happens.

The simulcast is a co-production for Sky Arts and ENO, and represents a fitting climax to a highly successful six year partnership, with Sky Arts as season sponsors of ENO. Viewers will have unprecedented access to all areas of this new production on Sky Arts 1, watching the action unfold backstage and experiencing first hand how a major opera is staged. The live broadcast on Sky Arts 2 is a must for any opera fan, and the simultaneous screening on Sky Arts HD will allow viewers the opportunity to experience this stunning production in glorious detail.

Marking the return of the renowned director Jonathan Mills to ENO, a dynamic cast of young artists - including Peruvian-born conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya making his British opera debut and British tenor Alfie Boe have been assembled for this production.

“This simulcast, to us, embodies everything that Sky Arts is aiming to do,” comments James Hunt, acting channel manager at Sky Arts. “This is a world class production, screened in the best possible format – but the first priority for our viewers has always been to go beyond traditional offers; and this encapsulates that vision perfectly. You’ll see the cast just before they step out onto stage; and then be able to flick over to see them perform.  That, to us, is truly groundbreaking. We’re thrilled to be working with the ENO to deliver it.”

“ENO’s partnership with Sky Arts has resulted in many exciting new opera productions with artists from the worlds of opera, theatre, film and the visual arts. I am therefore delighted that it is with Sky Arts we should break new ground with this unique broadcasting project,” comments John Berry, artistic director of ENO. “This broadcast will enable many more people to enjoy opera and provides a rare opportunity for audience s to make their own choices on how they view an opera on television.”

This sounds so exciting! Trouble is, which to watch - the real thing or the backstage stuff. LOL.

Stephen, With Sky+ or HD why not record both? Then you won’t miss anything if you flick between the two

How does simulcast work on 2 visual channels? I am used to watching a performance on screen and simultaneously hearing sound on radio 3 for instance. But I cannot watch 2 channels at once. Surely they have to be separately recorded and separately viewed unless you have 2 TV sets side by side tuned to Sky Arts 2 and SA 1? Please confirm or otherwise explain.

Looking forward immensely to Wednesday’s production. However, will you be transmitting subtitles, or perhaps include the surtitles, which I depend on when attending opera at the Coliseum.

I’m planning on recording both channels on my Sky+HD. I’ll then copy the backstage footage onto a dvd and watch the on-stage action (in HD) on my main tv (52") and the backstage action (from the dvd - hopefully in synch) on my 32” set which I’ll bring down from the bedroom. Should be quite something.

But not until I’ve seen the production in The Coliseum in two weeks’ time.

I’m with you on that dilemma, Stephen. Please, Sky Arts, can you rerun them another evening so I can record the other one? I want to watch both!

Thank you for your comments! Bryan, unfortunately we’re not able to provide subtitles for the live broadcast but we hope to get them later for the repeats. And the performance will be repeated at 8pm on Sunday 8th Feb. We’re planning to show both the performance and backstage action in an Easter Weekend opera extravaganza. And as for the cast list - that’s been added now that we know who’s performing. Wishing you all a fantastic evening of opera!

Am I missing something here?  Has Sky Arts gone bonkers?  Showing the two “sides” of an opera simultaneously on 2 channels is quite mad!

I hope this opera is repeated as soon as possible without the word LIVE graffitied across the screen. I suppose that is too much to hope for. It will probably have REPEAT instead

Having seen The Magic Flute at the Colliseum on Tuesday (thanks to Sky Arts’ terrific deal) it was fascinating to watch the backstage version of La Boheme.  Would love to see it ‘for real’ and see the whole set from the front to put everything into perspective.

I watched the backstage screening with real interest. What a great way to truly bring the association with ENO into a real partnership, a great use of TV. I hope it happens again. Fascinating and some great info from Jonathan Miller! Loved it and so pleased that you had the small screen so we could see what was happening onstage! One of the highlights – Miller apart – was the guy playing the bells!

A wonderful production, loved the 30’s atmosphere and the costumes. Melody Moore was superb. Looking forward to Sunday when I hope to be able to view it with subtitles.

I saw this last night live at the colosseum .  Very moving, wonderful production.  I really want to see it on Sky arts 2 but think I may be too late to get it sorted out.  I really would like to see it close up especially Act 1 which had the wonderful singing.

Brilliant performance. Like many other people I couldn’t think why I would want to watch the backstage activities live, but it was great - really interesting, but didn’t watch much as I didn’t want to miss any of the main performance. The cafe scene was brilliant - unlike many performances where the chorus just stand around, everyone seemed to be playing a part. Only problem now is my HD box is completely full of brilliant opera productions - just wish I could record them in HD!

What an amazing performance by all! They were acting singers- not the usual stiff figures we see in other productions. I loved being able to check backstage and still have a view of what was happening onstage as well. This was a great idea and I hope to see much more of Sky Arts and ENO. I can’t wait to see it again this weekend!

What on earth happened to the sound in the third act?  It sounds so distance and it is hard to make out some of it.  If you turn over to the ‘backstage’ channel you can hear the singing much clearer there, as it should be (except of course for the interviews interupting it.)

Why doesn’t anyone in TV actually WATCH the channel that we are watching to make sure that ridiculous mistakes like this don’t happen.  What was a thoroughly enjoyable and thrilling experience was suddenly ruined for me.  I literally had to put my TV volume to full and even then the voices are not clear under the sound of the orchestra, stage movements and audience coughing.  It’s clear the wrong microphones were transmitting to the live broadcast.
