This opera is the twelve-year old Mozart's first comic opera; a full-length opera buffa featuring traditional commedia dell'arte-style characters.
Synopsis
Translated as The Make-Believe Simpleton or The Feigned Idiot-Girl, the plot centres around the two officers, Fracasso and Simone, in 18th century Cremona, who are billeted on the estate of two wealthy bachelors, Don Cassandro and Don Polidoro.
Fracasso's sister, Rosina is a Hungarian baroness, who, in order to charm the bachelors into allowing Fracasso to marry their sister Giacinta, plays it dumb... Cue the usual comic complexities and misunderstandings. She is however, ultimately successful, and herself marries Cassandro, while Fracasso's lietenant marries Giacinta's maid Ninetta, and, as is the wont of comic opera, everyone lives happily ever after...
