Pier Francesco Cavalli's exotic opera of 1643 was a huge box-office hit up and down the Italian peninsula in the second half of the century - and once out of fashion was forgotten for almost 300 years, until it was "rediscovered" in the 1970s by conductor Raymond Leppard, while he was in Venice looking for lost works by Monteverdi.
L'Egisto is about all the pains and pleasures of love. The libretto, by Giovanni Faustino, tells of two pairs of lovers in the hands of capricious gods. This Scottish Opera production comes from 1982.
