It’s the countdown to Christmas but forget advent calendars, we’ve developed our own way to tick off the dark days of December.
You don’t need the pricey dress, the binoculars and the private box - Sky Arts 2 brings all the glamour and emotion of one of the world’s premier stages into your living room, with 25 stunning operas in December.
Enjoy both classic and innovative takes on some of the world’s most famous operas from the Metropolitan Opera Company, including Robert Lepage’s eerie La Damnation de Faust, Nicolas Joel’s light-hearted La Rondine and Anthony Minghella’s heart-wrenching Madama Butterfly, each featuring stars such as Renée Fleming, Danielle de Niese and Marcello Giordani. The season begins with The Audition, a suspenseful behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to be an opera star. Produced by award-winning documentary maker Susan Froemke, it follows three of 11 remaining contestants as they try to impress the judges, and get their big break, at the famous and gruelling Metropolitan auditions.

This is brilliant. I didn’t have HD when the Barber of Seville, I Puritani etc were on earlier this year.
I would love to see the 1998 Met production of the Queen of Spades which must have been on in the past with Domingo, Hvorostovsky and Soderstrom. Any chance of a repeat of this please?

I echo Sally’s wish to see the great Placido Domingo in The Queens of Spades. What a wonderful treat that would be!
I have only just subscribed to Sky and already I have recorded operas to to take me through the cold dark, winter evenings. Thank you.

I just discovered Sky Arts last week while visiting friends in London. That particular evening, we watched I Puritani ... Bravo Anna Netrebko.
Am so happy to know your site and will watch on the Internet as I have no television! The Christmas program is wonderful.
Thank you so much.

Fantastic line-up, and it’s been a great season - my first with SkyArts2.
I am <whispers> with The Other Side (cable) so don’t get the HD version but plain ordinary is pretty darn good!
Are there plans to show the rest of the Valenica Ring? I saw it live this summer and always did think the big screen backdrops and other effects would look better on film than in life, and they certainly do in Rheingold.

Wonderful as always-what have mainstream channels to offer???- ‘netrebko & villazon in La Boheme on christmas day and they think thats serving us well ---that’s why true arts lovers go to sky arts 2. Thanks for a wonderful year. Looking forward to The Magic Flute tonight. Agree about Alagna in Rondine---but then I’m biased...........

Is it possible to show the video of the Madama Butterfly performed by the Royal Opera House, Covenet Garder? It was shown by BBC2 a few years back and it was an excellent production.
