Sky Arts 2 presents a magnificent season of HD opera, screening the highlights of New York Metropolitan Opera's 2008-2009 season. Tune in for the best opera performances from the Met Opera starring Renée Fleming, Ramón Vargas, Karita Mattila and Anna Netrebko among many others.

THE AUDITION

A film that takes you backstage at the Metropolitan Opera’s national auditions, where each year thousands of hopefuls face their fears and compete for a cash prize and the chance to sing on the Met stage.  Directed by Susan Froemke.

OPENING NIGHT GALA
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Renée Fleming stars in the season-opening gala as music Director James Levine, Marco Armiliato, and Patrick Summers conduct fully staged performances of the second act of Verdi’s La Traviata, the third act of Massenet’s Manon, and the final scene from Richard Strauss’s Capriccio. Tenor Ramón Vargas, baritones Thomas Hampson and Dwayne Croft, and bass Robert Lloyd join the soprano for this season-opener.

SALOME
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Soprano Karita Mattila reprises her acclaimed interpretation of the title character of Strauss’s Salome, with baritone Juha Uusitalo as Jochanaan.  Patrick Summers conducts.

DOCTOR ATOMIC
Click this way for cast and act information >>
John Adams’s contemporary masterpiece explores a momentous episode of modern history: the creation of the atomic bomb. Director Penny Woolcock makes her Met debut with this gripping story that changed the course of history. Baritone Gerald Finley plays J. Robert Oppenheimer, the title character. Alan Gilbert conducts.

LA DAMNATION DE FAUST
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Robert Lepage directs Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, starring Marcello Giordani in the title role, with Susan Graham as Marguerite and John Relyea as Méphistophélès. James Levine conducts.

THAÏS
Click this way for cast and act information >>
The radiant Renée Fleming plays the Egyptian courtesan in search of spiritual sustenance. Thomas Hampson is the monk who falls from grace. Massenet’s sensual score is presented in a production by John Cox that originated at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jesús López-Cobos conducts.

LA RONDINE
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna star in this ravishing romance from the world’s most popular opera composer. Gheorghiu plays the kept woman who gambles on true love, and Alagna is the man who makes her question the cost of her glittering existence. Nicolas Joël directs the new production of this gorgeously melodic look at love. Marco Armiliato conducts.

ORFEO ED EURIDICE (Orpheus and Eurydice)
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Mark Morris’s acclaimed production returns! This complete vision for Gluck, with choreography by Morris and costumes by Isaac Mizrahi, features the artistry of Stephanie Blythe in the title role. The alluring Danielle de Niese is Orfeo’s adored wife, Euridice, who inspires the hero to face the underworld for her sake. Music Director James Levine conducts.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Patricia Racette sings the title role of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in Anthony Minghella’s stunning production. Marcello Giordani stars as Pinkerton. Patrick Summers conducts.

LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczala star as Donizetti's fragile title heroine and her lover, Edgardo. Mariusz Kwiecien is Lucia's tyrannical brother. Mary Zimmerman’s hit production is staged as a Victorian ghost story. Marco Armiliato conducts.

LA SONNAMBULA
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Mary Zimmerman, who directed Natalie Dessay in last season’s hit new production of Lucia di Lammermoor, underlines La Sonnambula’s dual elements of sleep and wakefulness in an intriguing staging set in the present. Bellini’s hauntingly lyrical score soars as performed by Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, back from their sensational run together in La Fille du Régiment in leading opera houses around the world. Conducted by Evelino Pidò.

LA CENERENTOLA
Click this way for cast and act information >>
Hot on the heels of her triumphant Met debut as Rosina in last season’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Elina Garanca portrays another Rossini charmer in this bel canto Cinderella story. Lawrence Brownlee is her Prince Charming. Veteran baritone Alessandro Corbelli demonstrates his impeccable comic timing to match the gravitas of Met favorite John Relyea. Maurizio Benini conducts.

A superb series of operas from probably the world’s most consistently good opera house. Following the Glyndebourne season & in particular the excellently presented L’Elisir , you deserve a huge thank you from all opera buffs . Very well done Sky Arts. I hope you keep it up in future years-- more (especially live ) from ENO, Glyndebourne, & the Met.please! The BBC should hang its head in shame !!

Thank you Sky Arts 2 for all of the wonderful productions from The Met, Glynebourne and other Opera Houses around Europe. Would be greatly appreciated if the credits that go up after the Met Productions could be slowed down somewhat in order that they can be read !
Looking foreward to repeat of the Met’s 2007 production of The Barber of Seville with Juan Diego Florez.

Enjoyed Lucia on Monday night. I thought the production was a little fussy. Piotr Beczala gave a very creditable performance under the cicumstances. A new Star? Mmm. In time maybe!

Keep them coming please!
