Thank goodness, something that’s not just a load more repeats. Especially looking forward to ‘Les Contest D’Hoffmann’ is this an unknown prequel/sequel to the better known ‘Les Contes d’Hoffmann’.
This sloppiness just points up Sky’s disrepectful attitude to it’s classical output for me. Perhaps a proof reader could also go through the linked list of casts and correct the many errors in characters names?

So far so good. At least a new collection. Hope they prove to be as good as they sound although reserving judgement on ‘Tosca’

Hope we don’t have too much of the dreadful Lawrence Brownlee. Its impossible to treat him seriously unless you close your eyes or he stands on a box.

Yes, I do agree with Mrs. Alagna about Lawrence Brownlee. He appeared as Don Ramiro in Cenerentola in May 09, and ruined the experience for me. Problem is, today’s lyric tenors are so ugly, including Ramon Vargas and Rolando Villazon. All have good voices, but close-ups in high definition do them no favours!!

Sorry to miss Les Contests couldn’t they get the tape? Contes d’Hoffmann that was shown instead was very much enjoyed. Calleja has such an enjoyably old fashioned voice, more of him please - can Sky not get hold of the Traviata from Covent Garden that was shown in the cinema?
Ray, to pick out those two is fine as they are plastered all over the place but what about Florez and Kaufmann, you can’t call them ugly but then Johan Botha in Aida - whaaa! Oh well ...

Watched Rosenkavalier and Carmen and the sound was truly appalling. An insult to such great singers.

I am enjoying the coverage of the Met Opera Season on Sky Arts 2 very much. All the operas have had something brilliant about them and here are some of my highlights:
- Laurence Brownlee singing Rinaldo in Armida was magnificent and the high tessitura was no problem. Fleming was slightly less convincing and not nearly as good as her flamboyant recording at Pesaro. We get a lot of Florez on CD - why not Brownlee?
- Marcelo Álvarez as Cavaradossi with Karita Mattila as a brilliantly highly strung Tosca
- Marina Poplavskaya as Liù in Zeffirelli’s war horse production of Turandot. Maria Guleghina and Marcello Giordano were a bit old school and wooden for me.
- Simon Keenleyside as a young and virile Hamlet which was a fabulous introduction to this opera for me
But the greatest two hours was spent falling in love with The Tales of Hoffman, an opera I have previously sruggled with on record (and yes I do have the Bonynge set). Here James Levine conducts and Anna Netrebko as Antonia and Joseph Calleja as Hoffmann are wonderful. Some real emotional angst here. I was amazed by Kathleen Kim as Olympia who even did her bows to the audience in doll like character. But it was Kate Lindsey as Nicklausse who stole the show for me.
Well done to all concerned at Sky Arts.
